When chewed, this plant releases insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that violently shoot out and embed in the cat's mouth and digestive tract. These needle-shaped crystals cause immediate pain and swelling. While rarely fatal, severe cases can cause airway swelling that interferes with breathing.
