Every part of this plant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that embed in soft tissues when chewed. Some varieties also contain protease enzymes that enhance inflammation and pain. The crystals cause immediate burning pain, and symptoms can persist for up to two weeks.

Keep Arum plants completely away from cats and remove from home if present. If ingestion occurs, rinse mouth thoroughly and seek immediate veterinary care. Monitor for breathing difficulties due to throat swelling.
