This common houseplant contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. When chewed, it causes immediate and severe pain, intense burning and swelling of the mouth and tongue, drooling, and difficulty swallowing. The swelling can be severe enough to block the airway.
Recommendations
Keep all Dieffenbachia plants far away from cats. If ingestion occurs, it is a medical emergency. Rinse the mouth with milk or water and contact your vet immediately.
